Control tempo and timing

BPM, time signature, snap grid and the metronome.

What you'll learn

  • Change the tempo
  • Pick a time signature
  • Choose how tightly recordings snap
  • Use the metronome

The steps

Read them here, or press Play along and the studio will walk you through them.

  1. Set the tempo

Open the Transport tab and drag the BPM slider. Everything — loops, drums, the metronome — follows it.

  2. Change the time signature

Type a time signature next to Time — 3/4 for a waltz, or something unusual like 7/8. Any metre works.

  3. Choose the snap grid

Snap decides how tightly recordings lock to the beat: 1/8 is loose and swingy, 1/32 is very tight. Triplet options are there too.

  4. Try the metronome

Toggle Metronome for an audible click on every beat, accented on the downbeat. Turn it off when you're done.
